2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer direction.

The president noted that the developers is now refining the project with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full text from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”

With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our players.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following some time of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most popular series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in receiving him next week. We are all excited to continue observing the progress of the game in the weeks to ahead.

David

Background of the Incoming Head

The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an official release date or consoles, but players can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
