Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
