RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
