European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
